IBIBIO SOUND MACHINE – UYAI

Ibibio Sound Machine are an eight-piece band led by London born, Nigerian raised singer Eno Williams.  Their music draws on many African influences as well as giving a nod to more westernised styles such as electro pop, rock, funk and disco.

The band’s new album, Uyai, meaning “Beauty,” is their first since their self-titled debut in 2014 and was released on Merge Records in March this year.

The album is an interesting and lively fusion of politically conscious Afro-beat and electro pop. Driving rhythms form the foundations but it’s the music around those beats that has developed into something beautiful, demonstrating a rich diversity of tempos and styles. The band has clearly found it’s feet on this release and the results are extremely satisfying.

Lyrics are sung in part-English, part-Nigerian (Ibibio) and the overall blend of styles is extremely refreshing to hear. In fact, how they’ve managed to pack so many Nigerian and Western musical flavours into just 11 tracks, whilst maintaining a well balanced sound is beyond me! Absolutely top drawer!

Don’t take my word for it though,  take a listen for yourself. I’m confident that this latest release will leave you wanting more from Ibibio Sound Machine in the future.
